Course Description

Biblical Counseling Skills I is the first course in a two-part series designed to build practical, faith-based counseling competencies. Grounded in the text, Skills for Effective Counseling: A Faith-Based Integration by Nesbit Sbanotto, Davediuk Gingrich, and Gingrich, this course offers an in-depth exploration of core counseling skills through a biblical lens. Students will learn how to thoughtfully integrate Christian principles into counseling practice through a balance of theory and hands-on application.

This course focuses on the first two phases of the counseling process: The Initial Phase and The Connection Phase. Key topics include the foundational principles of Christian counseling, the importance of both verbal and nonverbal communication, and practical strategies for building and maintaining effective counseling relationships. Students will engage in interactive discussions, case studies, role-playing exercises, and reflective activities designed to strengthen their understanding and implementation of faith-informed counseling techniques.
